I actually went up for two days, the first being MD/PhD interviews (some with Carnegie Mellon faculty), the second being MD interviews. The atmosphere of the school is the most laid back I have ever experienced. The MD/PhD day is long though, I think I had about 7 interviews, but again laid back. Lots of questions about research, your experiences, etc. The MD day consisted of one faculty interview, and one student interview. Both seemed like they were to get a feel for your personality more than a test of your credentials. UPMC practically has a monopoly in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas.

I also interviewed MD at U. of Pittsburg and was really impressed by the school. I think their curriculum (mix of lecture and small group PBL) is pretty strong. During the tour we stopped in the anatomy lab where the first year students were working- they all seemed really happy and excited about U. of Pittsburg- during that time I happened to talk to a student who graduated from UVA in 2003. She was really nice and spoke highly of U. of Pittsburg. Interviews were pretty laid back (student and faculty both one hour, closed file) and I also had a brief meeting with an admissions dean who had read my entire application. I was also impressed that after the interview day was over and I was just wandering around the school a med student approached me and seemed pretty positive about the school as well. The main library wasn't amazing but the hospitals seem top notch (especially the simulation facilitiy) and I stopped by the student gym which seemed nice.

Ditto the experience for the MD/PhD interview. A very laid back couple of days. The student and faculty interview for the MD portion was the same. An hour each, which is nice b/c you really have time to talk about things besides just "why do you want to be a dr." I talked about movies and books and ice skating (she was a figure skater) with my student for a while. Also they have one of the better tours I've been on. The stimulation center is amazing. Too bad all the "patients" are all 6 foot tall white males in perfect physical shape. The only thing missing was a fat smelly person simulator.
Oh and Pittsburgh was actually a lot nicer than I thought it would be. Clean city, decent weather, nice people. None of the run down steel town I was expecting.
